What happens in an airline operations control centre?

An operations control centre brings together information and decisions needed to support an airline's day of operations. The structure varies, but common functions include flight dispatch, aircraft control, crew control, maintenance coordination, station support and duty management.

Before departure, a planning desk may review the route, operational flight plan, forecast weather, notices, aircraft status and information for the crew. Other desks check their own responsibilities, such as crew availability, aircraft positioning, passenger connections and ground handling. Each source has an owner and a time at which it was valid.

Once flights are under way, the team monitors changes: an airport closure may affect the destination, alternate, aircraft rotation, crew and passengers at the same time. A good response describes the known facts, identifies what needs confirmation, assigns actions and sets a review time.

A recovery option is a proposal until its dependencies have been checked. A same-type aircraft on a schedule is not automatically available; position, technical status, crew and station capabilities all matter. Handover is equally important: outstanding decisions need an owner, a next action and the evidence used.

In Dispatch Deck, the control room, Watch Desk and mission lab offer a synthetic setting for practising that coordination. No exercise sends operational instructions to a real aircraft or airline.
