Flight dispatcher training: comparing the UK and USA

Flight dispatchers and flight operations officers support the planning and monitoring of airline flights. Their exact authority, training and qualification requirements depend on the State, the operator and the type of operation. A job title alone does not tell you which route applies.

In the United States, the FAA publishes requirements for the aircraft dispatcher certificate and maintains information about approved certification courses. Candidates should check the current eligibility, knowledge test and practical test requirements directly with the FAA and the school they are considering. An approved course is one possible route; applicable experience provisions should also be checked.

In the UK, flight operations support roles may be organised differently by the operator. Read the employer's person specification and the current UK aviation requirements, and ask how the organisation trains and assesses its operational staff. Do not assume that the US certificate automatically confers UK operational authority.

Start with aviation terminology, UTC, weather, navigation, mass and balance, operational documentation and communication. Move on to supervised case studies: build a plan, identify what is missing, explain your decision and revisit it when conditions change.

Dispatch Deck provides synthetic practice and study questions. It is not an FAA-approved certification course, a regulatory examination or a guarantee of employment or a pass. Verify current requirements and course approvals before paying for training.
