Fog, minima and choosing a good alternate
Why a destination forecast near minima changes your fuel, your alternate and sometimes your whole plan.
By Danyal Saleem

Low visibility is one of the most common reasons a plan changes late. When the forecast at destination sits near approach minima, planners look harder at the alternate: its own forecast, its distance, and whether it can actually take the aircraft.
Different authorities set different planning rules for when an alternate is required and what weather it must have. The Regulations page in the app summarises FAA, EASA, UK CAA and ICAO references side by side, with sources.
Practise the decision in the Academy: our scenario library includes thousands of fog, closure and diversion cases, each with the consequence of the choice you make.
